7 Family-Friendly Cruising Destinations in the Mediterranean
If you’re considering a vacation with a variety of family-friendly destinations, there are few places that beat a cruise of the Mediterranean. With a lot of affordable options out there, a sail around southern Europe and North Africa is a really effective way to introduce the kids to different worlds of culture and fun! Here’s a guide to 7 of the best destinations that offer something to suit all ages.
Canary Islands
Enjoy the best of the Canary Islands on a child-friendly tour of Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife. For the active family, an unforgettable adventure awaits. Climb to the summit of a snowcapped volcano, scuba dive the crystal waters of the Atlantic and spend an afternoon surfing at the many beginner-friendly beaches. Other attractions including dolphin spotting, mountain biking and visiting Spain’s largest water park.
Cyprus
With over 300 days of sunshine, this versatile destination can be enjoyed even during the winter months. Begin your adventure at the port of Limassol, which is home to the island’s most popular stretch of coast, Coral Beach. Drag yourself away from the sun lounger and take a horse riding tour of the nearby archaeological sites. Highlights include a fully preserved Roman amphitheater.
Malta
Another year-round destination, the sun-kissed island of Malta is a great choice for fans of the outdoors. Immerse yourself in the picturesque scenery at the Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park. Gentle walking trails wind through verdant forest and along coastal paths.
Another major Maltese attraction is the Mediterraneo Marine Park in Naxxar. With educational programs available, your little misters and misses can learn more about the island’s marine life and marvel at the exotic birds, while parents can even swim with dolphins.
The Algarve
Portugal’s golden coast is renowned for its beaches and affordable hotels. Families usually head to the resort town of Lagos, conveniently located close to the main beaches and attractions. Don’t miss a trip to Lagos Zoo, which is home to 120 species and even features a petting zoo. A day spent at must-visit attraction Aqualand – Portugal’s largest waterpark – will provide a selection of slides and pools for all ages.
Costa del Sol
With many cruises either departing or finishing in the Port of Malaga, Spain’s sunny coast is a popular place for travelling families to spare some time. Aside from the beaches, there are plenty of adventurous pursuits for visitors to try.
The whole family can enjoy the jaw-dropping Cueva de Nerja. This series of caverns can be explored on a guided tour. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience where your little ones can marvel at towering stalagmites and stalactites.
Majorca
Fast becoming one of Spain’s most sought-after destinations, the glitzy islands of Mallorca will leave a lasting impression. The resort town of Sa Coma on the east coast is home to a safari zoo and an awe-inspiring golf course. For the children, there’s a 36-hole mini golf course to keep them busy.
Greek Islands
With hundreds of isles to choose from, Greek Island cruise itineraries can be tailored to suit your needs. Do you prefer a family vacation away from the party crowd? Make a stop at Kefalonia, famed its verdant rolling hills and deserted beaches. Alternatively, travel to Rhodes and you can combine sightseeing with sun-worshipping.
Kolymbia Beach in the north is perfect for families, with a gently sloping shoreline and extensive facilities. On the same island, you’ll find the medieval city of Rhodes and also a handful of ancient ruins which date back to the Trojan War – even the kids will be impressed!
Choose any of these stunning and fun-packed destinations on your next holiday. You’ll all be sure of a memorable family holiday in the sun.
