5 Simple and Healthy Ways to Bake With Apples

Apples are one of the most versatile fruits around, especially because of how easy it is to take them with you wherever you go! The variety of apples to choose from seems never-ending—granny smith, gala, pink lady, red delicious, honeycrisp…the list goes on and on. They all have their own distinct flavours and qualities, which means more variety in the meals they can be baked into. There’s a reason for that old adage about “an apple a day keeping the doctor away”; these fruits are high in fiber and other antioxidants, and can assist with hunger management because their high water content makes them filling. Baking with apples is fun year-round, but especially so in the summer for those cooler evenings when my family’s craving warm apple pies, yummy apple chips to munch on, or an apple compote to enjoy as we watch the sunset from our backyard. Below are five of my favourite recipes that are simple, healthy, and use apples in delicious and creative ways:

Let’s Get Cooking! 5 Simple and Healthy Ways to Bake With Apples

1. The Best of This Life’s Homemade Baked Apples
These delectable baked apples (my mom’s personal recipe) don’t use any additional sweeteners or sugar, getting all their sweetness from the fruit itself. A dash of cinnamon and some sultana raisins, and voila! They can be a treat on their own, or a topping for pancakes or waffles.

2. She Love’s Biscotti’s Homemade Oven Baked Apple Chips
These incredibly simple apple chips only require two ingredients: apples and cinnamon. Cooking them for two hours at a low heat creates that delectable crispiness, so consider making these at night when it’s cooler outside.

3. The Bitter Side of Sweet’s Simple Apple Compote
Ready in twenty minutes with only four ingredients, this warm apple compote is the perfect finish to your summertime dinners.
4. The Spruce’s Old-Fashioned Gluten-Free Apple Pie
Invoking memories of pool parties and cookouts, this gluten-free apple pie uses granny smith apples, cinnamon, and nutmeg for that perfect old-fashioned taste.
5. The Pioneer Woman’s Homemade Applesauce
Applesauce is so easy to make at home, and is much better without all those added sweeteners and preservatives the store-bought kinds have.
