Homemade Cranberry Sauce

Last year, my mom made the most delicious homemade cranberry sauce for Christmas.
I’ve never really been a fan of the tart topping, until I tried her new recipe.  I could taste  notes
of orange and cinnamon – something I’d never found in any other cranberry sauce and it was
absolutely delicious!  She sent us home with a jar and we used it all up within the following weeks.

So I thought I would add this delectable cranberry sauce to our Thanksgiving dinner menu.

What I love about making things from scratch is the satisfaction of knowing precisely what goes into my family’s food. I like that this recipe has fewer than five ingredients and is chock-full of flavour.  When I was cooking the sauce, our home floated in an aroma that had both Mr. Smith and Little A. heading in the direction of the kitchen and I don’t blame them – it smelt divine and tasted so too!

Homemade Cranberry Sauce

12 ounces of fresh cranberries
(about 1 1/2 cups)
1 cup fresh pulp-free orange juice
3/4 cup raw sugar
1 Tbsp cinnamon
1 Tbsp orange zest

In a sauce pan, dissolve sugar into orange juice on high heat.  Stir until sugar disappears.
Lower to medium-high heatand add in cranberries and cinnamon.
Continue to stir occasionally as the sauce thickens.  The cranberries will
begin to burst and once this happens to most of them, the sauce is ready.
(Aprox. 8-10 minutes) – Transfer to serving dish & top with orange zest. The sauce
may look runny, but I assure you, it will thicken as it cools.
Store in fridge until ready to serve.
Enjoy!

  1. This looks so delicious! The thanksgiving meal is one I don’t have a lot of experience with, my 90 yr old grandma takes care of everything! And she wouldn’t have it any other way!

  2. Mmm…. oh I’m definitely trying this out this holiday season! I love Cranberry sauce with orange juice, but never tried it with cinnamon!xx

  3. Is it incredibly sad that I eat cranberry sauce out of the can? Its the one thing in a can that I like. But I think this will trump the stuff in the can! So easy, too! I’ll have to add it to our Christmas menu…

    1. Hi Laverne, most canned cranberries already contain sugar and are a sauce themselves (that I’ve seen…I don’t know if there are water packed canned cranberries. I’m not sure how it would turn out? In my opinion, I would stick to fresh or frozen cranberries. Thank you!
