TINA: The Tina Turner Musical is a story of resilience, reinvention, and relentless determination. Born Anna Mae Bullock in a small Tennessee town, Tina Turner rose from humble beginnings to become the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. But her journey was anything but easy. Trapped in an abusive marriage, struggling to reclaim her identity, and fighting an industry that tried to control her, she defied all odds and carved out a legacy that would inspire generations.

Now, Broadway Across Canada brings her unforgettable story to life with a high-energy, emotionally charged production. TINA: The Tina Turner Musical opened in Ottawa on Tuesday, February 11, at the National Arts Centre, delivering a performance that is as raw as it is exhilarating. More than just a greatest-hits musical, it immerses audiences in the power, passion, and perseverance that defined Tina’s remarkable life.

Tina Turner – A Powerhouse Performance

From her first note, Jayna Elise commanded the stage as Tina Turner. Taking on such an iconic role is no small feat, yet she delivered with intensity, vocal power, and unwavering energy. She didn’t just perform Tina’s songs—she lived them. Every lyric and movement carried the weight of Tina’s journey.

Act 1 introduced us to Tina’s early years, her childhood as Anna Mae Bullock, her complicated relationship with her mother, and her rise to fame alongside Ike Turner. The theatre filled with hits like “Don’t Turn Around” and “Let’s Stay Together,” setting the stage for her tumultuous journey. Then came “Proud Mary”—a moment that had the audience fully engaged, swaying with the infectious rhythm.

A Story of Triumph Over Adversity

TINA doesn’t shy away from the difficult realities of Turner’s life. The production is at times gritty, unfiltered, and emotionally charged, tackling themes like domestic violence, racism, infidelity, and addiction.

Because of these themes, the show carries a 14+ age recommendation. I attended with my teenage son, and after the final bow, we found ourselves in deep conversation. The show doesn’t just entertain, it sparks discussions about resilience, self-worth, and overcoming hardships.

One of the most intense performances of the night came from Sterling Baker McClary, who portrayed Ike Turner. His performance was unsettling, and deeply layered. He captured the complexity of Ike—the charisma, the charm, and the darker, abusive side that shaped much of Tina’s early life. When he took his final bow, it felt like the audience hesitated to clap. His portrayal was so convincing, you almost wanted to boo—a true testament to his performance.

A Celebration of an Unstoppable Icon

Act 2 brings Tina’s reinvention. She escapes Ike, struggles to find her voice in a challenging industry, and ultimately rises to superstardom with the help of key figures who believed in her. Roger Davies, the young manager who saw her potential, helped reshape her career, pushing her into the rock spotlight on her own terms. Meanwhile, she found love with Erwin Bach, the German music executive who became her lifelong partner and source of unwavering support.

This act delivers some of her most defining hits. “Private Dancer” is haunting and emotional, while “What’s Love Got to Do With It” feels like an anthem of independence, a declaration of self-worth and freedom.

Then came the moment that truly brought the house down, “Simply The Best.” The theatre erupted into applause, cheers, and an impromptu standing ovation. The final moments of the show were a pure celebration of Tina Turner’s strength, talent, and enduring legacy, proving why she remains one of the most iconic artists of all time.

Final Thoughts: Deeply Moving!

More than a tribute, The Tina Turner Musical is a powerful, exhilarating, and deeply moving story. It reminds us that no obstacle is too great when fueled by determination.
