You sit down on Sunday afternoon with every intention of getting organized for the week ahead.

Maybe you tackle the laundry, maybe you meal plan, maybe you clean out the fridge.

Or maybe you get halfway through your list before life happens.

A last-minute outing. Homework that didn’t get finished on Friday. A friend stopping by. A Sunday that ends up looking nothing like you planned.

The truth is, I’ve never believed a Sunday reset needs to be perfect to be helpful.

Sometimes I check off every item on my list. Sometimes I only manage a handful. But having a simple Sunday reset routine has always helped me feel less overwhelmed heading into Monday.

For me, a Sunday reset isn’t about deep cleaning the house or spending hours preparing for the week. It’s about taking a little time to get organized, look ahead, and create a smoother start to the days ahead. It helps me breather easier as the week rushes towards me.

Because even when I don’t finish everything, doing a few things intentionally on Sunday always feels better than starting Monday completely unprepared.

The Ultimate Sunday Reset Checklist

1. Review the Family Calendar

Start by looking at the week ahead.

Check appointments, school events, practices, meetings, birthdays, and anything else that might affect your schedule. This helps eliminate surprises and gives everyone a chance to prepare.

Even a five-minute calendar check can make a huge difference.

2. Plan Meals for the Week

You don’t need a detailed meal plan for every breakfast, lunch, and snack.

Simply decide what you’re having for dinner each night and make a grocery list if needed. There have been plenty of weeks when I’ve simply written “ground beef,” “chicken,” or “vegetarian night” on the calendar and figured out the actual meal later. The important thing is having some parameters in place so you’re not starting from scratch every evening.

3. Grocery Shop or Place a Grocery Order

Once your meal plan is set, take care of grocery shopping.

Some weeks that means a quick store run. Other weeks it means placing an online order while sitting on the couch with a cup of tea. I prefer online orders, because I can get really detailed with planning and budgeting.

Whatever works best for your family.

4. Tidy Key Spaces

Forget deep cleaning the entire house.

Focus on the spaces you’ll use most during the week:

  • Kitchen counters
  • Dining table
  • Entryway
  • Living room
  • Homework station

5. Finish the Laundry

If possible, start the week with empty laundry baskets.

In our house, this is a team effort. Sunday morning is when the kids clean out their rooms and bring down anything they want washed for the week ahead. If it doesn’t make it into the laundry, they’ll have to wait until the next load. We’ve saved a lot of Monday morning tears over missing favourite shirts and gym clothes by making this part of our routine.

My husband and I work together throughout the day, tackling loads as needed, while the kids help fold and put away their own laundry. It may not be the most exciting way to spend part of a Sunday, but starting the week with clean clothes and empty baskets always feels worth it.

6. Prep School and Work Bags

Check backpacks, lunch bags, gym bags, and work bags.

Make sure important papers are signed, water bottles are washed, and anything needed for Monday is ready to go.

This small task saves a surprising amount of stress on Monday morning.

7. Refill Household Essentials

Take a quick inventory of everyday items and do an online order, or quick trip to the store.

Think:

  • Toilet paper
  • Paper towels
  • Dish soap
  • Laundry detergent
  • School snacks
  • Coffee

Running out of essentials always seems to happen at the worst possible time.

8. Prep a Few Easy Snacks

Wash fruit, cut vegetables, or portion snacks into containers. I like to make overnight oats on Sunday evening, just 4 servings, to make things super easy for Monday. My kids like them for breakfast or snack.

9. Clean Out the Fridge

Take five minutes to toss expired food, wipe shelves if needed, and make space for groceries.

It’s a small task that makes meal prep easier throughout the week.

10. Choose Monday’s Outfit

This isn’t just for kids.

Picking out clothes the night before helps eliminate one more decision during a busy morning. One small thing I’ve started doing is putting a complete outfit on a hanger, right down to the cardigan, accessories, or anything else I’ll need. It sounds simple, but on a busy weekday morning, it saves more mental energy than you’d think.

If you’re really looking to get ahead, plan Monday and Tuesday’s outfits on Sunday. I’ve found that having the first couple of days sorted helps me ease into the week without spending time standing in front of my closet wondering what to wear. It’s one less decision, one less thing to think about, and one more way to make mornings run smoothly.

The goal isn’t to have every outfit planned perfectly. It’s simply to remove a little friction from the busiest part of the day so you can focus on getting everyone out the door.

11. Charge Devices

Phones, tablets, laptops, headphones, and smartwatches all seem to hit low battery at the same time.

Take a few minutes to plug everything in before bed.

12. Do One Thing for Yourself

This step is easy to skip but arguably the most important. Self-care.

Read a book.

Take a bath.

Go for a walk.

Watch a favourite show.

Enjoy a cup of tea.

Most families can complete the basics in a few hours, either concentrated or spread out throughout the day.
